Refugee Council of Turkey (TMK) Joint Statement for the Brussels IV Conference
In June 2020, Refugee Council of Turkey (TMK) members participated in the Brussels IV Conference hosted by the European Union and co-chaired by the United Nations. The “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region” conference, convened nine years after the start of the conflict in Syria, aimed to galvanise the international community to commit support to Syria and neighbouring countries hosting large numbers of refugees.
Following a consultative process involving all TMK members, the TMK presented joint statements focused on the twin themes of "Livelihood Support and Economic Recovery of Refugees in Turkey" and "Durable Solutions."
The TMK’s statements highlighted the protracted refugee situation in the country, the negative economic and social impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need to invest in increasing the economic self-sufficiency of refugees, reduce humanitarian dependency and create the necessary environment for them to become actively involved in society. In addition, the need to take measures to create an environment in which refugees in Turkey are able to freely choose whether they want to continue to build their lives in Turkey, settle in a third country or return to Syria.
