Policy Focus

The TMK works on a range of thematic issues, which are determined according to the priorities of the communities our members work with.

The TMK’s thematic Working Groups lead the development of policy propositions. are made up of members of the TMK, plus other civil society organisations that wish to collaborate in developing policy recommendations.

At present, our Working Groups are developing policy recommendations focused on three thematic issues, which were selected following a consultation with TMK members in May 2020:

  • Access to Services: this thematic issue encompasses the access of refugees and host communities to essential public services such as education and healthcare, as well as social protection. It also includes employment and livelihoods. The Access to Services Working Group is made up of 9members. It is currently developing policy recommendations on access to education, given that the Covid-19 pandemic, and the subsequent closure of schools, has exacerbated existing challenges in access to education for refugees;
  • Gender and Migration: this theme draws attention to the specific challenges that women and girls who are refugees, as well as women and girls in host communities, face, which are often underappreciated. As gender is an issue that cuts across all of the thematic focus areas of the TMK, this group develops specific policy recommendations relating to women and girls, as well as providing a gender perspective to the other Working Groups. The Gender and Migration Working Group has 15 members, and is currently beginning to develop policy recommendations;
  • Participation and Localisation: this thematic issue links the expansion of meaningful participation of both refugees and host communities in decision-making processes that affect their lives, with the need to strengthen the role of national civil society organisations in addressing the needs of these communities. The Participation and Localisation Working Group has 7 members and is currently beginning to develop policy recommendations on these critical issues.

The TMK also develops ad hoc policy recommendations for national and international policymaking processes.
