SMDD was created by Syrian refugees in August 2013.

Since January 2016, SMDD has continued its services for Syrian refugee women and children at the SMDD Community Centre in Izmir with the support of WAHA International (Women and Health Alliance). Syrian refugee women and children have access to psychological and health support, legal counselling, Turkish language lessons and translation assistance to facilitate their access to different available government services such as public hospitals. Thanks to its extensive network within the Syrian community, the SMDD has become a reference for Syrian women and newly arrived families in need of first aid and advice.

SMDD as a local NGO composed of Syrian and Turkish staff; Professional development has become a model of social cohesion, with the main purpose of integrating Syrian women into Turkish society, through communication and language, to acquire new skills, understand the culture and history of the host community.
