Together for the future – celebrating World Refugee Day 2021

 

To mark World Refugee Day on 20 June 2021, we asked some of the refugee and Turkish communities that we work with about their lives, hopes and how we can all live together, peacefully and in harmony. Whether from Turkey, Syria, Afghanistan or somewhere else, the responses were the same. Everyone we spoke to emphasised that we are all human, and that we have more in common than that which divides us.

 

Manolya Akan, 37, from Iraq, emphasises that it doesn’t matter what race or religion we are, we are all human.

 

 

Yaman Halaawi, 34, from Syria, reminds us that life is a miracle, that everyone has their own miracles, but to appreciate this, you have to take the first step. This can be a simple hello. 

 

 

Dila Kucukel, 22, from Turkey, says that to overcome discrimination, at first we have to understand and interact with one another. Here’s the rest of her interview, together with Sadik Muhammed Ozbek, 20, from Afghanistan, who believes that change can start with young people:
