TMK members marked World Refugee Day 2021

TMK members marked World Refugee Day on 20 June 2021 with a diverse program of events, ranging from webinars to picnics to film screenings. Here’s a selection of the diverse ways in which members marked the day…

  • KEDV worked with their neighbourhood leaders to design a program bringing together refugee and local women for a virtual event sharing poetry, music and stories across cultures;
  • IBC organized an event at Istanbul Urban Forest that brought together refugees and the host community. During the all-day event, games were organised for children, while awareness sessions were held for adults on access to health services, including vaccines. The beneficiaries of the IBC Kilis Community Center came together with an inspiring role model, and information was given on the rights of refugees, legal status and access to social services. You can watch videos from these events here and here;
  • IGAM organized two days of events for WRD. On June 19th, refugees and the host community came together in a picnic to marked harmony.  On June 20th, IGAM organized online events. In the first event, winners of IGAM Awards were presented in a live broadcast. After the ceremony, Prof. Guy S. Goodwin-Gill,  a well-known refugee law expert, gave a lecture about  “The International Refugee Regime and its Challenges” on IGAMTV.
  • IKGV organised a solidarity party, where women from different countries shared their experiences of solidarity during the pandemic. They also published a guide to living in Istanbul to help refugees navigate life in the city;
  • MHGD organised a seminar on women’s mental health
  • Support to Life published a series of blogs documenting the many and diverse ways in which refugees are overcoming the challenges they face to build a life in Turkey. The series documents how refugees such as Gade are working to support themselves and stand on their own two feet, or Muhammed, who is working to provide the best for his daughter;
  • ARSA held an awareness-raising online meeting together with Refugee Rights Centre to inform refugees of their rights when it comes to marriages, birth registrations and divorces. ARSA also published a series of stories of refugee artists living in Turkey during the course of the week;
  • Afghan Hazara Culture and Solidarity Association organised an open air film screening bringing together refugees and local communities.
